Mekong Eden Farm
Mekong Eden Farm
A 2-hectare ecological farm on the banks of the Mekong, accessible by boat from Luang Prabang: permaculture, rare vegetables and a social project founded by Om in 2016.
Mekong Eden Farm is a 2-hectare ecological farm nestled along the Mekong, accessible only by boat from Luang Prabang. Founded in 2016 by Phonepasith Sotitham, known as Om, it combines organic market gardening, permaculture and an educational mission serving the mountain communities of rural Laos.
Why visit Mekong Eden Farm
The site offers a rare contrast to the standard Luang Prabang circuit: no temples or markets, but rather an agricultural setting surrounded by mountains and opening onto the river, where you can observe firsthand how a permaculture operation functions in a tropical climate. The visit suits curious travelers interested in sustainable agriculture, local gastronomy and social projects alike. It works equally well as a half-day excursion or as lunch on-site featuring the farm's produce.
The appeal lies as much in the place itself as in its founder, whose journey gives coherence to the entire project.
The project and its founder's story
Phonepasith Sotitham, known as Om, launched Mekong Eden Farm in February 2016. Before settling here, he studied microbiology in Vientiane, then specialized in nutrition for two years in Poland. Returning to Laos, he joined Sayaboury province to work with GIZ, the German international cooperation agency.
This experience led him to establish SuDHiCA association in 2015, which aims to improve living conditions in isolated rural mountain communities across northern Laos. Facing challenges in securing foreign funding from Sayaboury, Om relocated to Luang Prabang the following year and developed the farm there. The 2-hectare plot, hemmed in by mountains on one side and the Mekong on the other, became both a production site and an educational space.
The stated objective has remained constant: training highland farmers in sustainable agriculture practices to foster their independence.
What to see and do here
The farm cultivates nearly a hundred plant species, blending traditional Laotian vegetables, Western varieties and rarer plants such as physalis, purple sweet corn and red okra. Crops coexist with fruit trees following permaculture principles, using no chemical inputs, with production spread throughout the year.
The farm tour
A guided visit allows you to understand how the plots are organized, plant associations, composting and water management. Om or a team member explains the agronomic choices and each species' role within the ecosystem.
Meals and tastings
Depending on the package chosen, your visit can include a meal prepared from the farm's vegetables and fruits. It's an opportunity to taste varieties rarely served in Luang Prabang restaurants.
Workshops
Seasonal workshops in cooking, gardening and permaculture are offered depending on the season and number of participants. They align with SuDHiCA's educational mission.
Practical information
- Duration: plan for a half-day to a full day depending on your chosen package (tour only, tour plus meal, workshop).
- Booking: essential, as the site doesn't operate on a walk-in basis. Boat logistics and meals must be arranged in advance.
- Rates: moderate, generally a flat fee including round-trip boat transport.
- Season: the farm is productive year-round; the dry season (November to March) remains most comfortable for navigation and outdoor visits.
- What to bring: hat, water, closed-toe shoes, insect repellent.
How to get there
Access is by boat only from Luang Prabang. Allow roughly 40 minutes of navigation on the Mekong, heading upstream. Transport is typically arranged by the farm as part of your booking. No road reaches the property, which reinforces its isolation and strengthens the project's integrity.
