The best time to travel to Laos spans from October to March: the monsoon has retreated, the rice paddies retain their deep green, and temperatures remain comfortable, especially in the mountainous north where December nights can get quite cool around Phongsaly or Luang Namtha. April is the hottest month, marked by Pi Mai, the Lao New Year, a fascinating time to experience in Luang Prabang despite the heat. From June to September, the rainy season is not an obstacle: showers are brief, the Mekong swells, landscapes are spectacular, and tourist numbers drop. Laos remains an accessible destination, but its cost depends mainly on the pace and comfort level you prefer. On the ground, everyday life remains very affordable: a meal in a Vientiane canteen costs just a few euros, and local markets have lost none of their authenticity.

From there, you can travel up the Nam Ou River to Nong Khiaw and Muang Ngoi, two villages surrounded by karst peaks that rank among the country's most stunning landscapes. The central region, around Vientiane and the Khammouane Plateau, appeals for its massive caves like Konglor and its rarely-trafficked motorcycle routes. Further south, the Bolovens Plateau reveals its waterfalls and coffee plantations, before reaching the 4,000 Islands archipelago, where the Mekong spreads out just before Cambodia. With a bit more time, the deep north — Phongsaly, Luang Namtha — opens the door to an ethnic Laos that remains little-known.
