Ban Xang Hai
Ban Xang Hai
Just 20 km from Luang Prabang, Ban Xang Hai has been distilling Lao-lao for millennia. A Mekong village where rice whisky, silk, and Sa paper tell the story of rural Laos.
Known as the Whisky Village, Ban Xang Hai opens the door to discovering the production of the famous Lao-lao, a traditional alcoholic beverage that forms an integral part of Laotian life. Nestled along the Mekong River north of Luang Prabang, tourists typically visit during boat excursions to Pak Ou Caves or on the way to the charming city of Luang Prabang. Beer Lao enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy here.
Ban Xang Hai promises an immersion in Laotian culture through Lao-lao production, silk weaving, and Sa paper manufacturing. The hospitality and kindness of the local population make visits truly memorable.
Ban Xang Hai Today
While the village serves as a waypoint during excursions to Pak Ou Caves, there's far more to discover. Splendid temples and sanctuaries dot the landscape, and you'll encounter the monks who call it home.
Historically, Ban Xang Hai was a whisky distillery. Archaeologists have uncovered pottery dating back 2,000 years and beyond. This is the place to visit to witness firsthand the production of Laos's traditional rice-based whisky. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the production process—it's fascinating to observe the various phases, which span approximately four weeks. If you wish, you can purchase Lao-lao directly from the village. Local shops also offer textile products, including silk fabrics and Sa paper.
The Legendary Lao-Lao
Lao-Lao, produced in Ban Xang Hai, is Laos's national spirit. It features prominently in blessing ceremonies and other cultural celebrations throughout the country. This alcohol typically contains around 40% alcohol by volume. Tastings are always available, and if you're pleased with what you sample, you can purchase bottles as souvenirs.
Continuing to Pak Ou Caves
A comprehensive and captivating exploration of the Luang Prabang region includes, beyond Ban Xang Hai, a journey to Pak Ou Caves. Located just kilometers from the village, these caves hold a history spanning thousands of years and shelter over 4,000 Buddha sculptures today. It's a deeply sacred site venerated intensely by Laotians. Countless pilgrims visit, especially in April during the Lao New Year or Pimai. Two caves can be explored: the lower Tham Ting Cave and the upper Tham Theung Cave.
Best Time to Visit
Ban Xang Hai welcomes visitors year-round. However, note that the village experiences heavy tourist traffic during high season from November through January.
Since Ban Xang Hai sits along the Mekong River, boat is one excellent option for arrival. It's 6.5 km if you take boats heading to Pak Ou Caves. These boats depart from Luang Prabang at the pier near the Saffron Café. If you prefer driving, it's 20 km from Luang Prabang.
As a small village, Ban Xang Hai is perfectly explored on foot.
