Nahm Dong Park
Nahm Dong Park
About ten kilometers from Luang Prabang, Nahm Dong Park combines waterfalls, cultural workshops and adventure activities across 18 hectares of nature.
Nahm Dong Park is a nature and cultural space set across 18 hectares, about ten kilometers from the heart of Luang Prabang. It combines waterfalls, hiking trails, craft workshops and adventure activities (zip-lining, canopy courses), making it an excellent option for a half-day or full-day outing away from the city.
Why visit Nahm Dong Park
Unlike the busy Kuang Si waterfalls, Nahm Dong takes a multi-activity approach where cultural workshops hold equal sway with swimming. You come as much to learn mulberry paper-making or Hmong embroidery as to zip-line through the canopy. The park suits both families and travelers seeking a quieter break from Luang Prabang's conventional tourist sites.
The landscapes blend forests, gardens, fruit orchards and several waterfalls feeding pools ideal for swimming. Picnic areas, some sheltered beneath thatched pavilions, are scattered throughout the park.
What to do at Nahm Dong Park
Zip-lining and canopy course
The zip-line course extends over 800 meters across six stations, with two routes of varying difficulty. The canopy walk offers five stations, including four ground-based obstacle sections and one zip-line. Age and weight restrictions may apply: check before booking.
Mulberry paper workshop
The workshop guides you through all stages of handmade paper production from mulberry bark. You take home the sheet you've created.
Laotian cooking class
The class begins with harvesting ingredients from the park's organic garden, using a recipe guide. Five dishes are then prepared and enjoyed at lunch.
Hmong embroidery
Led by resident Hmong families, the workshop passes on textile techniques and patterns from their traditional art.
Bamboo weaving
The resident master introduces participants to bamboo work and the making of functional objects: baskets, placemats, small containers.
Tai Lue dreamcatchers
According to Tai Lue belief, the dreamcatcher protects against nightmares and brings good fortune. The workshop lets you make one and take it home as a souvenir.
Garden of the Senses
This 1,000 m² space is organized around the five senses, with a section dedicated to traditional Laotian medicinal plants. The walk is brief but well-documented.
Hiking
Several trails cross forests, gardens and viewpoints, with waterfalls along the way. Routes are accessible to most walkers and can be explored independently or with a park guide.
Camping
The park rents tents, sleeping bags and mattresses with onsite facilities. A traditional house option is also available for those wanting to spend the night in a more authentic setting.
Practical information
- Recommended duration: half a day for a simple visit, a full day if you combine swimming, hiking and a workshop.
- Rates: modest entry fee, with workshops and adventure activities charged separately; budget more if you do multiple activities.
- Hours: open during daylight year-round; workshops require advance booking.
- What to bring: swimming suit, closed-toe shoes for trails, mosquito repellent.
When to visit
The dry season, from November to April, offers the best conditions: passable roads, stable trails and comfortable temperatures. Waterfalls are less powerful then but water remains clear for swimming.
During the monsoon (May to October), falls increase in volume and vegetation is denser, but access roads can become slippery and some outdoor activities are occasionally suspended after heavy rain.
How to get there
By tuk-tuk
The easiest option from Luang Prabang. Negotiate the round-trip fare and waiting time before leaving. The driver waits in the designated parking area until your pre-arranged return time.
By motorcycle
The most flexible option, though access roads can be uneven, with dust and gravel. Sunglasses, helmet and closed shoes are recommended.
By shuttle
A shuttle from your accommodation may be included when booking a park activity. Confirm at reservation time, as conditions can vary.
What to see nearby
- Kuang Si Butterfly Park, best combined with the waterfalls of the same name.
- Pha Ngern Mountain, for a hike with panoramic views over the valley.
- Tham Kang Caves, a less-visited natural site.
