After visiting Patuxai, the Morning Market Talat Sao, the National Museum of Laos, and Pha That Luang, travelers who aren't purists might find themselves with time on their hands in Vientiane.

After visiting Patuxai, the Morning Market Talat Sao, the National Museum of Laos, and perhaps Pha That Luang, travelers seeking more than the usual sights might find themselves with time on their hands in Vientiane. Yet countless engaging, enriching, entertaining, and sporting activities await in its surroundings.

Boredom can become a traveler's primary concern when visiting an unfamiliar country. You extend your stay by a day, feeling you've already done everything that interests you, yet it seems a shame to waste that extra day waiting for what comes next. The key lies in journey planning—preparing backup solutions, activities that might not come to mind at first but can prove invaluable when plans shift. Here's a small guide to 2 picturesque and original activities to enjoy from Vientiane.

Tad Moon by Bicycle

Water bottle in hand, feet on the pedals, brakes checked, and off you go for a vibrant half-day heading toward Tad Moon waterfall, located just a few kilometers west of Vientiane, upstream along the Mekong. Follow this legendary river as you pass through the neighborhoods one by one: Ban Kuntha, Ban Nakham, then Ban Wattay near the airport. Within minutes you'll find yourself in the Laotian countryside, a lush landscape dotted with rice paddies and palm trees. Continue following the Mekong to reach the village of Ban Mai; at its edge you can turn right and enter Phou Panang National Park to follow the tributary river that feeds into Tad Moon. This waterfall, which resembles rapids more than anything else, is a place of camaraderie and relaxation beloved by the capital's residents. They come here to picnic and chat through the afternoon, cool off in the water, and spend a thoroughly pleasant day.

The Nam Leuk River by Boat

One of the most rewarding, immersive, and active pursuits is reaching another waterfall: Tad Xay in the Phou Khao Khouay National Park, pack on your back, from the capital Vientiane. The plan is to spend one night in a homestay in the village of Ban Hatkhai, adjacent to the park entrance and nestled at the foot of the surrounding hills. To get there, leave Vientiane by car, motorcycle, or tuk-tuk for the more adventurous, and take National Route 13.

After 90 kilometers through rural landscapes, even decidedly picturesque ones, and just before entering the village of Thabok, turn left to leave the main road and take steeper paths. At the next crossroads, head right, cross the Nam Leuk river bridge, and you'll find yourself at the village of Ban Hatkhai. Here you can leave your belongings at a homestay, which you'll return to later for the night. From here, you can examine the riverbanks and find moored boats that regularly make the journey between the village and the foot of the hill where Tad Xay waterfall is located. While the path can be done on foot or by motorcycle, opting for the water route adds an exclusive charm to your adventure. Forty-five minutes by boat will get you to the foot of the hill, then you'll have less than an hour to climb to the waterfall. Along the way you'll encounter abundant wildlife and vegetation characteristic of this national park.

The return can be made the same way or a guide can pick you up at the foot of the hill, though at an additional cost. In any case, you'll head back to Ban Hatkhai village for the night, your eyes full of stars.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Tad Moon waterfall is accessible by bike independently from Vientiane. Simply follow the Mekong heading west, passing through the neighborhoods of Ban Kuntha, Ban Nakham, and Ban Wattay, then reach the village of Ban Mai to enter Phou Panang National Park. Basic navigation skills and an offline downloaded map are sufficient to get there.

Plan for at least two days for this excursion. The route from Vientiane to Ban Hatkhai village covers approximately 90 kilometers. From the village, the boat trip on the Nam Leuk river takes about 45 minutes, then the climb to Tad Xay waterfall takes less than an hour. An overnight homestay in Ban Hatkhai is recommended to fully enjoy the experience.

The dry season (November to April) is generally ideal for excursions around Vientiane. The trails are more passable and the rivers calmer. During the rainy season (May to October), the waterfalls are more spectacular but the paths can be slippery and the rivers more challenging to navigate.

Homestays are available directly in Ban Hatkhai village, at the entrance to Phou Khao Khouay National Park. It's advisable to inquire with park authorities or book through a local agency in Vientiane before departing, especially during high tourist season.

These 2 adventures are located in different directions from Vientiane (Tad Moon waterfall to the west and Tad Xay waterfall to the northeast). While technically possible to combine them over several days, it's more comfortable to plan them as separate outings to fully appreciate each one.
