This riverside port situated on the banks of the Mekong, some 200 kilometers north of the capital Vientiane, is an essential stop on any journey through Laos. A classic destination, the city of Luang Prabang has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1995. Its isolation, afforded by the mountainous terrain surrounding it, has allowed it to preserve an uncommon charm, and its landscapes—both natural and cultural—are truly breathtaking. We invite you to discover 5 exceptional sites to visit from Luang Prabang during your journey through Laos.

Mount Phousi

This sacred hill, home to numerous Buddhist temples, rises in the very heart of Luang Prabang to over 100 meters in height. It is nestled between the legendary Mekong River to the west and one of its tributaries, the Nam Khan River, to the east. This genuine elevated sanctuary, accessed by a staircase of some 300 steps, truly dominates the rest of the city and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding urban landscape, bordered on each side by the region's mountains. A refreshing treat for the eyes.

The Centre for Traditional Arts and Ethnology

The arts museum of Luang Prabang, located in the heart of this riverside port, offers a remarkably unique perspective on Laos of the arts and cultures of four major ethnic groups in the country: the Akhas, the Hmongs, the Tai Dams, and the Kmhmus. The exhibitions display hand-sewn traditional clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, handcrafted tools and household items, reconstructions of domestic scenes, as well as religious artifacts. The museum provides you with a brochure entirely translated into English to better understand these works.

The Markets

These trading hubs, celebrated throughout Southeast Asia, are naturally present in the city of Luang Prabang. There are four of them: the artisanal night market with its distinctive red and blue tents, the Hmong market where you can discover the rich products offered by this Laotian ethnic group, the food market open from 5am to 10am in the morning where you can find fresh local produce, and finally the Chinese market, well-renowned locally, allowing you to find everything you might need.

The Kuang Si Waterfalls

These waterfalls, located about ten kilometers south of Luang Prabang, are a highlight of any visit to this Laotian city. Set across three tiers, they are accessible via a trail running along the left side of the natural site from bottom to top. Well-maintained walkways are also present, allowing you to appreciate this visit, which is truly crystalline in its clarity. The waterfalls begin, upstream, at the summit of a rather steep hill, in a basin of sublime turquoise-blue water. Downstream, the main cascade plunges a height of 60 meters! The location is very shaded and cool, ideal when the weather is dry.

The Pak Ou Caves

The two caves of Tham Ting and Tham Theung, located 25 kilometers northeast of Luang Prabang at Pak Ou, the mouth of the Ou River, are of unquestionable authenticity. Somewhat elevated, they offer, at the entrance, a splendid panorama over the Mekong downstream. The caves are renowned for the small wooden Buddha statues that adorn their chambers. There are reportedly around 4,000 in total. These two caves present a completely contrasting style. Tham Ting, entirely covered in limestone, allows abundant light to enter and makes for a comfortable experience within. While Tham Theung, far darker and more obscure, calls to the adventurer to uncover all its secrets.
