What are the must-see attractions around Luang Prabang?

These are undoubtedly the major attractions of the Luang Prabang region. And many tourists sometimes travel here just for them… It must be said, the waterfalls of Luang Prabang offer landscapes unparalleled in the world: turquoise water (a color made possible by the presence of minerals such as calcium carbonate), cascades on multiple levels, lush nature… You'd think you were almost in paradise!

Located less than 30 km from the city center, Tat Kuang Si waterfall is the largest in the region. When you visit, you'll pass through a rescue center for Asian black bears. As for Tad Sae waterfall, you reach it after boarding a small local boat along the Nam Khan river. In either case, you can plan a full day of sightseeing to make the most of it. Planned activities include: short hikes to view the waterfalls from every angle (from ground level to the top), picnicking on the banks, and swimming to cool off!

Pak Ou caves

Located 25 km from Luang Prabang on the banks of the Mekong, the Pak Ou caves form a sacred site and pilgrimage destination deeply respected by locals. It must be said, they have a history dating back thousands of years. Indeed, you'll find an incredible number of Buddha effigies and relics (numbering no fewer than 4,000!) that have been deposited by Laotians throughout the centuries.

Two caves can be visited: the lower cave called Tham Ting and the upper cave Tham Theung which requires the use of a flashlight to explore. To access them, you must take a boat to cross the Mekong. And just for the views from the river, the experience is worthwhile!
