What to Pack for Laos
Preparing for a trip can feel overwhelming. For a stay in Laos, several questions inevitably arise: What will the weather be like? Where exactly will I be traveling? What are the essentials? It's crucial not to forget anything in your suitcase, as finding replacement items once in Laos isn't always straightforward.
Our on-the-ground experience and local knowledge will help you prepare your travel bag thoughtfully so you can depart with peace of mind. Here's our guide:
Clothing for Laos
Being a tropical country, Laos experiences consistently high temperatures both day and night, though temperatures cool down in the evenings in the north. For this reason, we recommend packing lightweight cotton garments to manage the heat while still protecting your skin from the sun. We also suggest bringing a warm pullover or cardigan for cool evenings and air-conditioned transport. Moisture-wicking clothing is particularly valuable, especially for trekking in rural areas. This type of fabric dries relatively quickly, which proves helpful in the humid climate. Pack long sleeves and pants to protect against mosquitoes, especially in the evening.
Although Laos has no coastline, you'll discover beautiful waterways, natural pools, cascades, and of course the Mekong. It would be a shame to miss out on swimming because you forgot your swimsuit—so don't overlook it!
Also pack comfortable hiking shoes that you've already broken in. Avoid brand-new unworn shoes, as you risk painful blisters.
Don't forget a hat or cap either—the sun is intense during the day, and a nasty sunburn or sunstroke would be unfortunate. If you don't have one, your guide can fashion charming headwear from banana leaves for you ;)
First-Aid Kit
Essential to any journey, a first-aid kit should travel with you everywhere. That said, avoid overpacking medicines—bring only what you truly need:
- Paracetamol and aspirin (for pain and fever)
- Anti-diarrheal medication
- Anti-nausea tablets
- Disinfectant
- Antibacterial gel
- Tiger balm
- Arnica cream (for bruises and bumps)
- Tweezers
- Thermometer
- Compresses
- Bandages
- Saline solution
- Water purification tablets
- Mosquito repellent
- Sunscreen
- Soothing burn cream
Other Essentials
No vacation is complete without capturing your finest moments. A camera and SD card are therefore essential. To recharge your electronics (camera, phone, e-reader, tablet, etc.), remember to bring a portable power bank! Small and usually lightweight, it allows you to recharge devices when electricity isn't available. While trekking through the Laotian countryside, a powerbank can prove invaluable ;)
Carry photocopies of your passport and other important personal documents, and create digital copies stored in your email for backup.
A small travel pouch worn close to your body can be useful for carrying documents and cash without risking theft.
