The spirit of travel
Laos is among the least explored destinations on the Asian continent. Founded in the 14th century with the help of the Khmer, this former kingdom of Lan Xan represented the largest kingdom in Southeast Asia until its decline at the end of the 19th century. The territory is crossed by the Mekong, a mythical symbol of Indochina that marks the border with Thailand to the west and Burma to the north. A trip to Laos allows you to immerse yourself in a diverse culture, including that inherent to the Lao people, animism, Theravada Buddhism, remnants of French colonization as well as socialist influences. The Lao people enchant us with their hospitality, kindness and humility which evoke in some way the traditions of "old Asia".
From the verdant mountains of the north to the peaceful islands of the south, Laos unveils a great variety of landscapes where nature reigns supreme. Temples with golden roofs, traditional villages, bustling markets and peaceful banks of the Mekong provide a setting conducive to discovery and contemplation. Between cultural heritage, omnipresent spirituality and sincere encounters with local populations, the country invites you to a timeless journey, far from the hustle and bustle of Asia's most visited destinations. Laos is an ideal destination for travelers seeking authenticity, serenity and unforgettable human experiences.

Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary

Arrival in Vientiane
We have arrived at Wattay Vientiane International Airport and are proceeding with immigration formalities. Our English-speaking guide welcomes us there.
We head to our hotel by private car to settle in.
We walk through the streets of the city centre to observe the temples that majestically line the main street. The beautiful colonial houses are also wonders not to be missed. They evoke the characteristics of Vientiane and its past.
At the end of the day, we meet at the night market and at Chao Anouvong Park to watch the magnificent sunset over the Mekong. It is the meeting place of locals.
Dinner is free. The Pha Khao Lao is a good option if we want to taste authentic cuisine. It is located just a stone's throw from the quays, in a very pleasant setting.

Vientiane, Buddha Park
Hotel breakfast (included). Our guide awaits us in front of our hotel at 8 o'clock. He takes us for the day on a tour of the monuments that have built the capital's reputation.
At the top of the list, we have That Luang. This beloved and emblematic stupa of the country is impressive with its golden reflections.
We continue with the discovery of Patuxay or the Arc de Triomphe of Laos and the fabulous Vat Sisaket temple.
The adventure continues at Vat Sisaket, a magnificent monastery, then at Vat Hoprakeo, the sanctuary that housed the Emerald Buddha now moved to Bangkok.
We move away for a moment from the heart of Vientiane to reach the "Buddha Park". This place is an important site for professional reintegration for disabled Lao women. It offers them a chance to rebuild themselves by participating in handicraft creation workshops.
On site, we are presented with the project of the center. We then have the opportunity to ask questions, to see these women engaged in their tasks or even participate in a newspaper recycling workshop.
We treat ourselves to a unique experience by having lunch on silent drifting boats, as the locals do on weekends in couples, families or with friends.
For this, we go to Tha Ngon which is located about 25 km from the city. The meal is prepared on the banks so we can board the boat that goes upstream by motor. We eat seated on board a wooden pirogue, on cushions and with low tables. A thatched roof covers it all to form a real little floating cabin along the Nam Ngum river. No engine noise allows us to enjoy our meal calmly. Along the way, we stop at the Dong Mak Kai market to taste fried insects.
We continue our day of discovery with the Buddha Park located about thirty kilometers from the city center. Remarkable sculptures dating from 1958 are scattered throughout. This place is located on the banks of the Mekong River. It is a park known for its originality and its mix of Asian religions (Hinduism and Buddhism).
Return to Vientiane.
At the end of the day, we can visit the COPE exhibition center which shows us the impacts of the second Vietnam War on the local population through UXOs.
Free dinner, but we recommend the Tummour restaurant located on the banks of the Mekong which offers us an ideal setting with a beautiful view of Thailand.

Vientiane - Paksan - Xieng Khouang
We depart by car for a journey of approximately 2 hours to visit the city of Paksan located on the banks of the Nam San river and the Mekong.
Lunch in a local restaurant.
We then travel for 5 hours to reach Xieng Khouang. Known locally as Phonsavanh, this city is the gateway to the famous Plain of Jars, the scene of violent conflicts during the Second Indochina War and the Secret War in Laos.
Several stops are planned to admire exceptional landscapes. We make sure to stop at Muang Khoune, a former provincial capital before the bombing campaigns of the Second Indochina War. Here we can find, in particular, ancient temples and a giant Buddha statue.

Xieng Khouang and the Plain of Jars
The day begins with the discovery of the first site of the Plain of Jars. The latter consists of numerous sites, but only three of them are accessible to the public, including Thong Hai Hin which houses 250 jars weighing between 600 kg and 6 tonnes. We then proceed to visit the two other sites.
We have lunch in the form of a picnic.
We arrive at the Mulberries Farm around 1 pm. We immerse ourselves in local life which revolves around silk and its closely guarded secrets. Laotian silk is renowned for having a manual and artisanal manufacturing method. Being part of what is called wild silks, it is characterized by its rougher and less smooth appearance, which gives it a noble, living and 100% organic character. All stages of production are carried out manually. We thus have the opportunity to participate in a workshop of our choice.
Returning to Xieng Khouang around 4:30 pm, we visit the MAG exhibition centre to learn more about the consequences of the bombings during the last conflicts in the area.
Local dinner on site.

Xieng Khouang - Sam Neua
We have breakfast, then stroll through the market to discover local products.
We travel to Sam Neua for an 8-hour journey, including stops.
Muang Kham is the first stop. We have the opportunity to see the hot springs located nearby. These are renowned for their therapeutic properties.
About twenty kilometers await us to reach the Tham Piu caves which are known to have suffered bombing by the Americans during the Vietnam War. Several hundred refugees sheltering there were killed in November 1968.
Lunch at a local restaurant in Nam Noeun.
We arrive at Sam Neua and settle into our rooms.

Sam Neua - Vieng Xay - Sam Neua
We have breakfast in a local restaurant before heading to Vieng Xay, a site located near the border with Vietnam. The journey takes 40 minutes. Birthplace of modern Laos and the Pathet Lao, it is the starting point of all resistance against the American bombing of that era.
We observe the caves where rebel armies took refuge.
Lunch in a local restaurant.

Sam Neua - Viengthong
After breakfast at a local restaurant, we head to Viengthong for a 5-hour drive. We take a rural road that is little known to tourists.
We pass through numerous ethnic villages, including Hmong and Khamu. A visit to Namet Phou Loei Park gives us the chance to spot, with a bit of luck, wild tigers of Laos.
We arrive at Viengthong. This location hosts the night safari project implemented by Wildlife Conservation Society, aimed at preserving the last wild tigers in the south-east Asia region where heavy poaching is prevalent. It is also known for its hot springs.
Check-in at our guesthouse, followed by free time.
Viengthong, night safari
We set off for Sopkua, the starting point of our safari in a songthiew. The latter is a popular means of transport in the countryside of Laos for connecting villages.
We continue along a splendid mountain road for nearly 90 minutes to reach the meeting point, namely the WCS station. Upon arrival, we are welcomed by our local guides before embarking on the visit to this Khamu village. We discover in particular animist practices.
We then board a longboat for a 1 hour 50 minute journey along the Nam Nern River. We have the opportunity to spot lizards and various birds.
Upon arrival at the camp, we settle into our bamboo huts.
Lunch.
An explanation regarding the tiger conservation and protection project is given to us.
In the middle of the afternoon, we continue navigating upstream along the river before taking a walk in the forest and discovering a mudflat. We are guided by local hunters and rangers.
We continue the cruise towards the dinner location on a sandbank. This evening meal takes place around a campfire where we have the opportunity to share local tales and legends, not forgetting to discuss the upcoming night safari: what animals to observe, the rules of conduct to follow during the safari…
Once night falls, we set off on the adventure with the longboats, engine off and our guide. Only the guide is able to use a flashlight to illuminate the surroundings and spot animals. When he spots animals, we can also turn on our lights. We may encounter sambars, porcupines, otters, muntjacs and many others. Total silence is required and communication is done by signs so as not to disturb the wildlife.
It should be noted that this night safari project aims particularly to raise awareness of the protection and conservation of wildlife in the region. A bonus (included in the safari price) is then given for each animal spotted to the villagers of the 14 villages participating in this project. This is to encourage the preservation of animals and combat illegal trade and poaching.
After the safari, we return to the camp to spend the night there.

Night Safari – Vienthong – Nong Khiau
Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park → Sopkua
We wake up and offer a morning walk around the camp to discover the virtues of medicinal plants in the jungle.
We have breakfast before boarding the canoes to reach the station. There, there are forms to fill out regarding the fauna observed.
Lunch at a local restaurant before taking the road to Nong Khiau which may take approximately 5 hours to cover 230 km. This road runs along the southern border of Namet Phou Loei park and allows you to admire ethnic villages, including Hmong and Khamu.
In the late afternoon, we arrive at Nong Khiau, a town located within beautiful karst relief.
Many activities are available in the region. We can take advantage of the magnificent setting of the region which overlooks the Nam Ou river. It is also possible for us to enjoy spa or sauna.

Nong Khiau – Luang Prabang
Upon arrival at Luang Prabang, we climb to the summit of Mont Phou Si, ascending 382 steps, to enjoy a superb panoramic view of the city and surrounding area at sunset.
We stroll through the night market held in certain streets of the city each evening. We will find plenty of souvenir items to take back with us.
After that, we have free time.
Dinner is on your own. The Restaurant Dyen Sabai is an excellent option to experience a peaceful, intimate and family atmosphere. This magnificent setting is located on the opposite bank of the Nam Khan. It allows you to discover, among other things, the Sindat, the Laotian barbecue where vegetable broth and grilled meat are cooked simultaneously around a metal dome.
After some free time at our resort, the guide accompanies us back to Luang Prabang for 3 to 4 hours of travel.
Lunch during the journey at a local restaurant.

Luang Prabang
Optionally, we can wake up at dawn to participate in the alms-giving ceremony to the monks of the city. This takes place between 5:30 and 6 a.m.
Before returning to the hotel, we could make a detour to the morning market.
We start the day with a delicious breakfast (included).
We then begin exploring the iconic monuments of Luang Prabang.
Among the must-see sites is the Vat Xieng Thong located at the confluence of the Mekong River and the Nam Khan River. It is an emblematic temple of the city that stands out for its typical local architecture. Countless devotees consider it a major pilgrimage site.
The National Museum, former Royal Palace and Vat Mai are also essential sites that we will not fail to visit.
Within the Vat Xieng Mouane, we will have the opportunity to discover crafts dedicated to Buddhist art at its training center. We then walk along the facade of the French Institute of Luang Prabang, former residence of humorist Pierre Desproges.
Continuing with a visit to Ock Pop Tok: this center is dedicated to promoting products from traditional textile craftsmanship in Laos.
Lunch on site (included).
If we feel like it, a visit to an ethnology museum can occupy our afternoon (closed on Mondays). With this option, we will have the opportunity to better understand the ethnic diversity of Laos as well as its culture.
We could add to this participation in a spinning top-making workshop. It is a toy very much appreciated by Hmong children. For several decades, adults have been playing it as part of a throwing competition. Here, you will have the chance to design your own wooden spinning tops and use them with the villagers. A moment of conviviality and fun guaranteed!
In the late afternoon, we enjoy the last rays of daylight with a visit to Vat Prabat Tai to admire the twilight sunset reflected on the Mekong.
Optionally, we can play a game of pétanque with seasoned locals. It's ideal for immersing yourself in the laid-back atmosphere of the region.
Dinner on your own. On recommendation, we can try the Tamarind restaurant with its fresh products and dishes following traditional or even ancestral Laotian cuisine.

Luang Prabang – Kuang Si Waterfall – Buffalo Dairy
After breakfast, we head towards The Bamboo Experience located on the outskirts of the city. Going there will be an opportunity to observe the surrounding nature and rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see.
On site, we will attend a bamboo weaving class. Then, we will have a few awareness sessions on the usefulness of bamboo-based products in the daily life of a Laotian (fishing or hunting equipment, musical instruments, etc…). We will also participate in a cooking workshop with a bamboo-based dishes theme. Among other things, the class will consist of preparing dishes to taste from the side of a sala overlooking a splendid landscape (group activity).
In the afternoon, we head to the famous Kuang Si Falls. These waterfalls are located 32 km from Luang Prabang. The road leading there is lined with splendid rice field landscapes. On site, we enjoy its pools of crystal-clear waters. We will visit its small permanent exhibition focused on the preservation of Southeast Asian black bears threatened with extinction.
Apart from the waterfalls which constitute a major attraction in the region, we have the possibility to indulge in swimming in natural pools with turquoise and crystal-clear waters.
Before returning to the city, we will take a short thirty-minute detour to the buffalo farm «Lao Buffalo Dairy». We will receive clarifications about the situation of this animal in Laos and the care administered to them. We can also approach some of them and bottle-feed the young ones.
At the end of the visit, we taste ice cream made from buffalo milk which are flavored differently depending on the season: with fruit, sesame, lemongrass…
Intimate dinner. The day's recommendation is given to the Luang Prabang Kitchen restaurant. We enjoy delicious affordable cuisine from its terrace. And we appreciate the view overlooking the main street.

Luang Prabang – elephant camp – departure
Hotel breakfast (included).
In the company of our guide, we leave our accommodation at 8:30 AM to head towards the Nam Khan river valley. We will go down to the elephant camp.
Upon arrival, we receive a brief introduction to the camp and its elephants before starting the visit. In particular, we are told about their living conditions: veterinary care, food, well-being, etc. We will have the chance to walk alongside one of these Asian giants through the forest.
As an option, we can make a detour to the Tad Sae waterfall (detour possible depending on the season, preferably from July to December when the pools are full of water).
Buffet lunch at the camp (included).
Return to Luang Prabang in early afternoon.
Collection of our luggage at the hotel and transfer to Luang Prabang airport.
We take our return flight (flight booked by the traveler, flight and times to be reconfirmed).
Note: hotel rooms must be vacated by 12 PM. Luggage can be left at reception. Otherwise, it is possible to keep these rooms until 6 PM for an additional fee.

To enter Laos, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after your entry date into the country and must contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps and visa affixing.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn, or altered pages).
Visa
Unlike some Southeast Asian destinations, Laos does not offer visa exemptions for nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Canada for tourist stays. A visa is therefore mandatory and can be obtained through several methods.
Visa on Arrival: available at most international entry points (airports in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Pakse, as well as certain land border crossings). It allows stays of up to 30 days and is issued in exchange for payment of approximately 30 to 42 USD depending on nationality. A recent identity photograph is generally required.
e-Visa: it is also possible to submit an electronic visa application online before departure through the official portal of the Laotian authorities, for a tourist stay of up to 30 days.
Embassy Visa: the application can be submitted to the embassy or consulate of Laos in your country of residence before departure.
The authorities may also request:
an exit ticket from the country (return or onward flight),
proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay,
confirmation of an accommodation reservation.
Health and Vaccinations
No vaccinations are mandatory to enter Laos from the EEA, Switzerland, or Canada. However, certain vaccinations are strongly recommended by health authorities:
hepatitis A and hepatitis B,
typhoid,
rabies (depending on activities and areas visited),
Japanese encephalitis (for extended stays in rural areas).
A preventive antimalarial treatment may be recommended for certain regions, particularly rural and forested areas. Consult your doctor or a travel medicine center before departure.
Traveling with Children
Minors must hold their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay, as well as their own visa.
In some European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to leave the country may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.
Other Nationalities
Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Affected travelers should inquire at the embassy or consulate of Laos in their country of residence.
