Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary
Bangkok - Chiang Rai
We arrive at the Bangkok International Airport early in the morning. We are in transit before flying to Chiang Rai.
The driver welcomes us at Chiang Rai airport.
Transfer without guide to our lodge which is located about 90 minutes away.
In the afternoon, we can stroll through the village to meet the local shaman, weavers and women who make indigo batiks.
Dinner and overnight at the lodge, in the heart of a Hmong and Lisu village.

Chiang Rai Region - Houay Xay - Pakbeng
This morning, we are transferred to the immigration post for 30 minutes of travel.
We take a public shuttle to take us to the Laos side crossing the Mekong by the Friendship Bridge. For this short transfer, we need to carry our luggage and budget approximately 1 USD for the shuttle.
Upon arrival in Laos, our English-speaking local guide welcomes us after completing the country's entry formalities. He takes us to the pier to embark on a private cruise on the Mekong starting at 9 a.m., heading to Pakbeng.
In the late afternoon, we arrive at Pakbeng. We are transferred to our lodge.

Pakbeng – Pak Ou Caves - Luang Prabang
It is likely that before breakfast, we will have the opportunity to visit the local market to meet local residents and soak up a bit of the morning atmosphere of this small town in Laos. After breakfast, our cruise continues towards Luang Prabang.
Around Pak Ou, we make a stop to discover the legendary caves which house hundreds of Buddha statues. These caverns represent an important pilgrimage site for Laotians, particularly at the time of the Lao New Year which takes place in mid-April.
An optional stop is also planned at Ban Xang, a very touristy village renowned for its rice alcohol production.
Once we arrive at Luang Prabang, we discover the impressive Vat Xieng Thong, one of the most beautiful temples in the region.
We are transferred to the hotel so we can drop off our belongings.
Dinner is on your own. For this, the very fresh and refined local cuisine of chef Linda is a good idea. Her small Bamboo Tree restaurant is located along the Nam Khan river, in the middle of the old town.

Luang Prabang
Optionally, we can wake up early to participate in the alms offering to the monks of the city. This takes place between 5:30 and 6 AM.
Before returning to the hotel, we could take a detour to the morning market.
We dedicate the day to discovering the historic district of Luang Prabang which was the royal capital. We are free to choose which sites to visit, however, our guide will not fail to suggest the must-sees of the city. Among many others, the National Museum and Vat May, near the Royal Palace are worth prioritizing.
We pass by the French Institute of Luang Prabang. This is the former home of humorist Pierre Desproges.
Lunch at the Atsalin restaurant.
The adventure continues with a visit to the old temples of the city, namely Vat Vitsoun and Vat Aham. We head to the Heritage House, then we take a small detour to the ethnological museum, which gives us a better insight into the ethnic diversity of the region as well as its cultural wealth.
We will have the opportunity to end the day with an outing to Mont Phou Si. This place turns out to be a highly prized location for its spectacular panoramic views of the entire city, especially at dusk.
On the way down, we can make a small stop at its night market to discover some samples of Lao craftsmanship (visit possible another day depending on our preferences)
Dinner on your own. However we recommend Dyen Sabai, a charming place, ideal for an evening of sindad (Lao barbecue). This place is located on the opposite bank of the Nam Khan river, connected to the peninsula by a small bamboo bridge. We can enjoy grilled meats that we prepare ourselves on a hot plate, as well as vegetables.

Luang Prabang – Kuang Si Falls
Luang Prabang → Kuang Si Falls
After breakfast, we head towards the magnificent Kuang Si Falls. These waterfalls are located 32 km from Luang Prabang. The road leading there is lined with splendid rice paddy landscapes. On site, we enjoy its pools of crystal-clear waters. We will visit its small permanent exhibition focused on the preservation of Southeast Asian black bears threatened with extinction.
Besides the waterfalls which constitute a major attraction of the region, we have the possibility to enjoy swimming in natural pools with turquoise and crystal-clear waters.
Picnic lunch near the falls
Kuang Si Falls → Luang Prabang
Before returning to the city, we will make a short thirty-minute detour to the buffalo farm « Lao Buffalo Dairy ». We will receive information about the situation of this animal in Laos and the care provided to them.
We will also be able to approach some of them and feed the young calves with a bottle. At the end of the visit, we will enjoy artisanal ice cream made from buffalo milk. Available flavors: fruits, sesame, lemongrass (depending on the season).
It should be noted that this animal is emblematic of the countryside in Asian countries. However, this species of bovine is facing extinction despite its importance. The mortality rate at birth is close to 50% because at this stage, buffalo calves do not have access to sufficient nutrients. With this in mind, the Lao government has organized itself to multiply its herds with prevention and breeding projects. This is how the Buffalo Farm in Luang Prabang grew by coupling these programs with local breeders. This farm also focuses on the dairy and cheese industry.
At the end of the visit, we taste ice cream made from buffalo milk which are flavored differently depending on the season: with fruits, sesame, lemongrass…
We continue with a visit to Ock Pop Tok: this center is dedicated to promoting products from traditional textile craftsmanship of Laos.
We have a free dinner, but it is suggested to taste traditional Lao dishes at the Tamarind restaurant.

Luang Prabang – Paksé – Bolaven Plateau
After breakfast, we are transferred at 9 am to the airport to take a flight to Paksé, in the south of the country.
Upon arrival, an English-speaking guide who knows the region well welcomes us.
We quickly have lunch before visiting the Bolovens Plateau. This region enchants us with its beautiful waterfalls as well as its coffee and tea plantations on its fertile lands. It produces the finest teas and coffees of Laos and the Indochinese peninsula. We thus have the opportunity to taste them.
Several sites are not to be missed during the journey. We stop at the Tad Lo Falls then at mulberry farms before heading to Thatheng to explore its ethnic villages, such as Lao Loum, Taoy, Lavenh…
We reach our hotel which surprises us with its exceptional natural setting. It is located near Paksong, on the Bolovens Plateau.
Dinner is on your own at the resort restaurant.

Boloven Plateau – Tad Fane Waterfall – 4000 Islands
Bolaven Plateau → Ban Hat Xay Khun
After breakfast, we set off to discover the magnificent Tad Fane twin waterfalls.
We then head to Ban Hat Xay Khun where we board a motorized pirogue to reach the heart of the 4,000 islands of the Mekong.
Ban Hat Xay Khun → Île De Khong
After 1 hour 30 minutes of navigation, we dock on the islands of Don Det and Done Khone. These peaceful pieces of land stand out for their French colonial past testified by its old buildings, the bridge that connects the two islands and its railway that was used for the transport of goods.
Lunch during a stop on the island of Done Khong.
It is possible to reach Nahm Dong park by bike by following a flat route in complete peace. These waterfalls are known locally as Tad Sompamit. It is an excellent way to observe and immerse ourselves in local rural life.
End of day free, but we can choose to observe the Irrawaddy dolphins. However, it can happen that these wild animals are absent from the area.

Khone Phapheng Falls – Champassak – Vat Phou Temple – Done Daeng
We have breakfast before heading to mainland and driving to reach the Khone Phapheng Falls. These jewels are located further south, on the border with Cambodia.
Subsequently, we head back to Champassak while discovering the charming Ban Nong Bune village. It captivates us with its impressive wood carvings.
We take a ferry to cross the Mekong once again to reach the colonial village of Champassak.
Lunch at the family-run restaurant and guesthouse Nakorn Café.
We enjoy a beautiful walk to observe the colonial houses, most of which are left abandoned. We also visit the Vat Phou temple and its museum. This pre-Angkorian architecture sanctuary has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2001.
We sail to reach the Don Daeng island, then we settle at La Folie Lodge, located in a paradise natural environment with a pool overlooking the river.

Done Daeng
Free day without a guide.
We can enjoy the pool and Lodge services for entertainment.
A beautiful bike ride on the picturesque paths of Done Daeng island is also an excellent idea. We have the possibility to take bikes for free at the hotel reception.

Done Daeng - Paksé – departure
At 6:15 AM, we navigate to Champassak where we find our minivan to take us to Pakse Airport.
We take the international flight there.

To enter Laos, your passport must be valid for a minimum of six months after your entry date into the country and must contain at least two blank pages for immigration stamps and visa affixing.
The document must be in good condition (no damaged, torn, or altered pages).
Visa
Unlike some Southeast Asian destinations, Laos does not offer visa exemptions for nationals of the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and Canada for tourist stays. A visa is therefore mandatory and can be obtained through several methods.
Visa on Arrival: available at most international entry points (airports in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Pakse, as well as certain land border crossings). It allows stays of up to 30 days and is issued in exchange for payment of approximately 30 to 42 USD depending on nationality. A recent identity photograph is generally required.
e-Visa: it is also possible to submit an electronic visa application online before departure through the official portal of the Laotian authorities, for a tourist stay of up to 30 days.
Embassy Visa: the application can be submitted to the embassy or consulate of Laos in your country of residence before departure.
The authorities may also request:
an exit ticket from the country (return or onward flight),
proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay,
confirmation of an accommodation reservation.
Health and Vaccinations
No vaccinations are mandatory to enter Laos from the EEA, Switzerland, or Canada. However, certain vaccinations are strongly recommended by health authorities:
hepatitis A and hepatitis B,
typhoid,
rabies (depending on activities and areas visited),
Japanese encephalitis (for extended stays in rural areas).
A preventive antimalarial treatment may be recommended for certain regions, particularly rural and forested areas. Consult your doctor or a travel medicine center before departure.
Traveling with Children
Minors must hold their own valid passport covering the duration of the stay, as well as their own visa.
In some European countries, when a minor travels without one of their parents, an authorization to leave the country may be required according to the regulations of their country of residence.

Entry conditions may vary depending on nationality. Affected travelers should inquire at the embassy or consulate of Laos in their country of residence.
