Choisir de voyager au Laos sous l'angle de la culture et des traditions, c'est accepter un autre tempo. Celui des aumônes silencieuses à l'aube, des bonzes en robe safran qui traversent les rues de Luang Prabang, et des marchés du soir où l'on partage un sticky rice sans formalité.

Le pays compte près de 50 groupes ethniques officiellement reconnus, chacun avec sa langue, ses tissages, ses rituels. Dans les vallées du nord, autour de Luang Namtha ou Nong Khiaw, les villages Hmong, Khmu et Akha vivent encore au rythme des récoltes et des cérémonies animistes. Au centre et au sud, le bouddhisme Theravada structure le calendrier : Boun Pi Mai en avril, Boun Bang Fai (la fête des fusées) en mai, Boun Ok Phansa en octobre marquent des moments forts où le voyageur est accueilli sans mise en scène.
