A Geography Lesson on Pakkading

Nestled in Bolikhamxai Province in central Laos, Pakkading is the district that warmly welcomes the Nam Kading National Biodiversity Conservation Area (NBCA). The villages of Donexai and Ban Bung Khla Nuea, located in the Bolikhamxai region approximately 152 km east of Vientiane, Laos's capital, are its main neighbors.

Nam Kading National Biodiversity Conservation Area: A Must-Explore Destination

Make the most of your stay in Pakkading by giving your family the chance to explore and discover wild fauna. Located 40 km southeast of town, the park spans 1,600 km². Due to its rugged terrain, it remains unmarred by human construction.

Encounter Diverse Animal Species

The park is home to 43 mammal species and 234 bird species. You may come face-to-face with northern and southern white-cheeked gibbons, sun bears, gaurs, tigers, elephants, and giant muntjacs. Keep your camera ready to capture various endangered bird species such as the great hornbill, chestnut-breasted malkoha, green peafowl, and Vietnamese argus pheasant. Birdwatching enthusiasts will be delighted to spot other avian species including the fork-tailed sunbird, crowned hornbill, river lapwing, sooty babbler, and rufous-throated fulvetta. Watch carefully for the pale-headed pigeon, a species unique to Nam Kading. The king of the jungle is absent here, allowing visitors to observe animals safely up close.

A Botanical Sanctuary

Throughout the park, you will be surrounded by mixed evergreen and dry deciduous forests. It may surprise you to learn that 84% of the park's area is covered in native forest. Rich in botanical diversity, the region boasts no fewer than 256 plant species, including two rare species: Lagerstroemia balansae and Justicia gendarussa.

Climate

Pakkading experiences genuine heat and humidity with often-overcast skies during the rainy season. In the dry season, warmth persists with moderate humidity and occasionally cloudy skies. Overall, temperatures range between 16°C and 33°C throughout the year, rarely dropping below 12°C or rising above 37°C.
